Dicky Barrett, The Defiant, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Visits Preston & Steve
Dicky Barrett, former leader of The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, now fronts the punk rock super group, The Defiant.
The Rascal King stopped by The Preston & Steve Show before his sold out show at the TLA. His new band, The Defiant, opened for Me First And The Gimmie Gimmies at the iconic South Street concert venue.
The Defiant is made up of former members of all star bands. Pun intended. On guitar is Greg Camp of Smash Mouth who penned the 1999 hit, “All Star”. The Offspring’s Pete Parada is on the drums, Joey LaRocca from The Briggs covers guitar and keyboards while Street Dog’s Johnny Rioux is on bass.
We dug deep into Dicky’s career. Talking about everything from the pride of being a son of Boston, his iconic raspy voice, and the attitude he has since let go of from the height of his career. Oh, and Jimmy Kimmel calling him out for not know his kids’ ages. “I know what grade they’re in!”
Throwback to a question Preston asked years ago about the lyrics to, “The Impression That I Get.” Is the chorus about being lucky enough to never have to knock on wood or knocking on wood because he hasn’t felt the pain described in the song? Dicky confirms that there is a comma in the chorus. I’ve never had to, knock on wood, but I know someone who has… That comma changes the whole dynamic of the song.
It was a morning show kinship when we were reminded that the iconic raspy voice once hosted his own morning radio show. We were reminded of the perks of living on the West Coast like constant access to high profile guests, sunny drives to work, and East Coast games starting at 10 AM!
Dicky also talked about his contributions to the Punk Rock History Museum created by NOFX lead singer Fat Mike. The same spot where Preston & Steve’s own Marisa Magnatta hosted her surprise elopement.
So, what is the future of punk music? Funny the topic came up, because our favorite local punk group, FROGGY, was hanging in the ACME Lounge. Preston fired up their classic hit, “7-Eleven Nachos”. Dicky was impressed and eager to meet the group behind the convenience store hit.
What is Dicky’s impression of other Boston born celebrities? Most of them are cool… but there’s one Masshole he’s not fond of. You’ll have to watch the interview for the tea.
