Matt Damon attends the red carpet of the movie "The Last Duel" during the 78th Venice International Film Festival on September 10, 2021 in Venice, Italy. Robert Downey Jr. attends the premiere of Universal Pictures' "Dolittle" at Regency Village Theatre on January 11, 2020 in Westwood, California.

Matt Damon and Robert Downey Jr. join Cillian Murphy and Emily Blunt in Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan’s biopic on one of the fathers of the atomic bomb.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Universal is calling the movie an “epic thriller that thrusts audiences into the pulse-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it.”

Murphy will be portraying the theoretical physicist who helped develop the atomic bomb during World War II. Apparently, Blunt will be playing his wife, Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer. Damon will reportedly play Lt. Gen. Leslie Groves, the director of the Manhattan Project that created the atomic bomb, while Downey will play Lewis Strauss, the infamous Atomic Energy Commissioner who initiated hearings that questioned Oppenheimer’s loyalty to the United States and infamously had the scientist’s security revoked.

Nolan wrote the script and is directing, while his creative partner and wife, Emma Thomas, is producing. The project is based on Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin’s Pultizer Prize-winning book, American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer.

Oppenheimer has set a July 21, 2023 release date. Damon’s most recent project he starred in, he also co-wrote: Ridley Scott’s historical drama The Last Duel.  Downey last starred in Dolittle, the talking animal adventure that Universal released in 2020.
