Dethklok, the all-powerful band at the center of the Adult Swim series Metalocalypse, will descend from Mordhaus to pulverize Philadelphia on Sunday night.

The animated death metal outfit are headlining night #3 of the Adult Swim Festival Block Party in Fishtown. Their return to the stage after three years is reason enough to check out the fest, but there’s lots more happening, too: Run The Jewels, Tierra Whack, Chill Moody and more at the Fillmore, live comedy at Punchline, Hop Along and RJD2 at Brooklyn Bowl, panel discussions on Rick & Morty and Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and lots of specialty beverages and food trucks. It’s three days of fun in every dimension, no portal fluid required.

As for Dethklok, they’ve been dormant for a little while, but show creator and bandleader Brendon Small is reviving the brutal music and gory misadventures of our favorite metalheads. Some background for the uninitiated: in the Metalocalypse series, which spanned four seasons and wrapped in 2013, Dethklok is the world’s most popular band, with devotees who risk life and limb to bask in their glory. Despite their enormous wealth and influence, the band members are, well, less than equipped to deal with basic life stuff.

The series is ultra violent, but the wholesome nature of the band’s brotherhood – and the show’s kickass soundtrack – endeared the series to metalheads and absurdists alike. For years, fans been begging for a renewal of Metalocalypse after the finale left a lot of questions unanswered. In an intervew with Sara, Brendon Small assured us that those questions will be addressed in an upcoming film, which is currently underway.

Small explains: “I can tell you… what has already been released, which is that we are making a feature Metalocalypse movie, and that’s what we’re in production on right now. So we’re right in the middle of making the movie, so all the questions that were still lingering after The Doomstar Requiem (a 1 hour long rock opera special) are being answered… I don’t want to say too much about it, but it’s a very big project, we’re all excited to be knee deep in it right now.”

When pressed for a release date, he commented with a smile, “That will be up to [Adult Swim] to discern. I just know that I’ve still got work to do.”

So is there anything that he can reveal about the Metalocalypse movie? “I can say one thing: it WILL be brutal.”

It’s been almost a decade since we’ve seen or heard new Dethklok material, so when the film finally arrives, we’ll be braced for the brutality. So what else has Small been keeping busy with?

“I’ve done a lot of pinball voices,” he says. “I’m the voice of the Metallica pinball game, (and) the Aerosmith pinball game… there’s a game that Scott Ian and I worked on together, and did the music for… I just did the Led Zeppelin pinball game, and I have some really fun stuff coming up soon that I can’t talk about just yet.”

Small also tells Sara about which metal heavyweights are big fans of Dethklok, how violence plays a comedic role in his work, the rest of the players in his band and the “explosive” live show that we’re in for this Sunday. (And, cuteness alert: his dog Gilda makes an appearance.) Watch the entire conversation below.

UPDATE (8/5/22, 5pm): Brendon Small’s studio was robbed. If you see any of the gear listed below around the LA area or for sale online, let him know!
