Someone Created a Pop-Punk Cover of ‘Master of Puppets’
Metallica and their timeless track “Master of Puppets” has been given the pop-punk treatment, for better or for worse.
The cover can be heard below and is the work of Todd Barriage. The YouTuber has a history of covering popular tunes in various genre styles and creating wild mashups. Barriage created an emo cover of “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” from the Disney film Encanto . Additionally, he created a mashup of Rage Against the Machine’s “Guerrilla Radio” with Will Smith’s “Men in Black.”
By no means is the “Master of Puppets” cover “bad”; the production is outstanding. However, it’s just one of those things that just feels really wrong. Take a listen and judge for yourself, but we think you’ll come to the same conclusion.
“Master of Puppets” has practically been 2022’s “song of the summer” thanks to its use in Netflix’s hit series Stranger Things. After it was heard in the season finale of the show, the track made its debut on the Billboard Hot 100 chart 36 years after its initial release.
Metallica went on to close out their headlining set at Lollapalooza on July 28 with “Master of Puppets” and projected Stranger Things character Eddie Munson performing the track on their onstage screens. Metallica even partnered with Netflix to create their own Hellfire Club merch.
In other words, this summer has been quite the epic celebration of classic metal.
