Wrexham AFC To Play Philadelphia Union II In A Friendly At End of July
One of the cooler stories in sports the past couple of years has been Wrexham AFC. They were a team no one had ever heard of in the lowest levels of English Football a few years back. But then Rob McElhenny and Ryan Reynolds decided they wanted to buy a Soccer club. And Wrexham was their choice. In November of 2020, they made the move to buy the scuffling club with a fanbase desperate for a return to relevancy.
Since then they have turned the club into quite the story. A documentary produced by the two owners has followed the story of Wrexham as they sought promotion. This season they finally attained that goal. They are out of the National League, and into the English Football League.
Co-owner Rob McElhenny’s Philly roots gives Wrexham and some ties to the city. In the past, they have worn Eagles-themed jerseys. And those ties are leading to something pretty cool. On July 28th, Wrexham will travel to Philly for a friendly match vs the Philadelphia Union.

The game is set to tip at 7:30 on July 28th. Pre-registration for ticket sales is open now. You can click the link in the above Tweet to find out how to get in line for when tickets actually go on sale.
It will not be the main Union team, but rather the Union’s MLS Next Prop Team, Union II. So don’t expect to see Andre Blake or Daniel Gazdag out there. But it is still a chance to see Wrexham play. The Union have been on their own road to bringing the sport to its town. Philly was never exactly a soccer town. But with the success of the Union is the past several years, Subaru Park is often a packed house. And it is likely to be another packed house when Wrexham comes to town.
