Eagles QB Jalen Hurts Named Philadelphia Citizen of the Year for Community Service
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts received the city’s highest honor for his dedication to helping local communities. At a ceremony celebrating outstanding residents, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro handed the quarterback the Philadelphia Citizen of the Year award.
“What I strive to do is just serve, mentor, progress, give people opportunities that they don’t even know that they have,” said Hurts to CBS News Philadelphia.
Through his foundation, Hurts addressed crucial community needs across the city. He helped install air conditioning in hot classrooms and supported important youth programs. His “Carry the Difference” project provided needed supplies to students in struggling schools.
The event also recognized other local heroes. Young philanthropist Declan Cassidy, aged 15, earned Youth Citizen honors after his “Socks for the Streets” initiative gave out 80,000 pairs to homeless individuals.
“If you want create change in the community, you have to work hard, follow your dreams and know that every little bit counts,” said Cassidy to CBS News Philadelphia.
Two community leaders, Larry Magid and Judith M. von Seldeneck, got the Lifetime Achievement award from former Governor Ed Rendell for their lasting contributions.
While similar to the ESPYs in format, this celebration highlighted local heroes – from committed block captains to pioneering medical staff and motivating teachers.
As the first-ever Philadelphia Citizen of the Year Awards, the event aims to recognize residents who make their communities better through service and commitment.
