Interview: Researcher Proves that the Philly Accent Will Disappear Soon(ish)
Betsy Sneller received her PhD in Linguistics from the University of Pennsylvania and is currently a postdoctoral research fellow in the Learning and Development Lab at Georgetown University. She’s super smart.
So when we learned about her research proving that the Philly Accent is beginning to fade away, we were intrigued… and very concerned. We contacted Betsy to get her on the show and she dropped some crazy knowledge bombs on us.
Did you know that the Philadelphian Accent is the most studied accent of all the English speaking areas? (We’re #1! We’re #1!) Dr. Sneller – that’s what we call her now – actually breaks down why we transform these into deez or drop the word “to” from the phrase “I’m going down the shore.”
