Code Orange “Take Shape” in a New Song with Billy Corgan
Code Orange debuted another track from their upcoming album The Above with some help from Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins.
The band first teased the collaboration with the Pumpkins’ leader over two years ago on social media with a photo from the studio. The track was kept under wraps until today (7/19) when the band premiered a striking visual for the song. The video follows Code Orange frontman Jami Morgan traversing a dreamlike sequence: bright and beautiful, but with an unsettling lack of dimension.
Code Orange have been shattering eardrums since emerging from the Pittsburgh hardcore scene over a decade ago, but during the pandemic their profile grew exponentially. Their Grammy-nominated album Underneath came out the same week that COVID lockdown took hold in the States, and while other bands kept quiet during quarantine, the self-proclaimed “thinners of the herd” came roaring through screens with dazzling livestreams and 3D visuals that kept them at the forefront of modern metal.
Their next album The Above is set to arrive on September 29th via Blue Grape Music. Last month, the band teased this new collection with a pair of brutal and undeniably catchy songs: “Grooming My Replacement” and “The Game”.

In a press released, Jami Morgan says about the upcoming collection: “We wanted the album to be able to wash over you with melody, aggression, and joy, but it was of equal importance that the closer you look, the more you are rewarded. It was to feel rooted in the “analogue” world, but with threads of digital reality binding things together. We wanted the sound and even the recording process itself to reflect that edict, so we enlisted Steve Albini at Electrical Audio to get the most real and raw version of the band possible, even recording us all at once in a room together for the first time in our career.”
The band recently announced a self-curated music festival, CODE’S WORLD, which will also be their hometown album release show in Pittsburgh. The lineup boasts hand-picked favorites of the band, including Madball, E-Town Concrete, Vein.FM, 200 Stab Wounds and more. Tickets and info are here.
