Happy Birthday to the Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz, Jack Haley. He would be 126 years old today, August 10, 2023.
Jack Haley was born John Joseph Haley Jr. on August 10, 1897, in Boston, Massachusetts. Early in his career, Haley headlined in vaudeville as a song-and-dance comedian. He made his first foray into movies in the silent Broadway Madness (1927) and returned three years later as a Paramount player in Follow Thru (1930). In the 1940s, Haley continued to lend support to major stars in films like Moon Over Miami (1941), with Betty Grable and Don Ameche, and Higher and Higher (1943), with Frank Sinatra.
Most notable, though was his role as the Tin Man in the classic 1939 smash hit movie, The Wizard of Oz.
The Wizard of Oz is the story of a tornado that hits Kansas and transports a young girl named Dorothy, played by Judy Garland, to a magical place called Oz, where she embarks on a journey to track down the Wizard who can help her go home.
While on her travels to see the Wizard, she meets the Tin Man, who is looking for a heart. He joins Dorothy on her journey to the Wizard so his dream can come true.
I love The Wizard of Oz, as does WMMR’s Sara. Jack Haley was an absolute legend on the screen, and he portrayed The Tin Man so well. Wishing him a happy heavenly birthday today!
