Queen Rock Montreal: Where to Watch in IMAX in the Philly Area
Queen Rock Montreal captures the band at one of their “highest peaks,” per guitarist Brian May. Now, you’ll be able to experience their legendary performance in IMAX, but only for a limited time.
The concert film covers a two-night stand at the 18,000 seat Montreal Forum in November of 1981. Queen had eight LPs’ worth of blockbuster material to draw from, with their hit singles dominating radio and record stores across the world. Their track with David Bowie, “Under Pressure,” could be heard at every turn. This was just before the band began to lean heavily into dance and disco influences, favoring a guitar-based chemistry over the synthesizers that punctuated their later albums. The result on stage was a raw energy that thrilled their sold-out audiences.

Queen’s official site says about the movie, “Rock & roll royalty Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon take to the stage in a historic and exhilarating performance of their greatest hits including ‘We Will Rock You,’ ‘Somebody To Love,’ ‘Under Pressure,’ ‘Bohemian Rhapsody,’ ‘Another One Bites the Dust,’ ‘We Are The Champions,’ and additional songs from popular album The Game including ‘Dragon Attack,’ ‘Play the Game,’ and more.”
Footage from the two shows were edited together and originally released under the title We Will Rock You, and remastered in 2007 as Queen Rock Montreal. Starting on January 18th and running for just four days, you’ll be able to watch this stunning moment in rock history in the full IMAX experience, complete with surround sound and digitally remastered imagery.
Brian May commented on the significance of these shows: “This film has preserved one of the highest peaks in Queen’s touring life, on stage in the old glory days. The director was very much focussed on Freddie, and this now stands as probably the most precious intimate capture ever of Mr. Mercury at his full awesome power.”
Drummer Roger Taylor simply says: “Enjoy. We were young!”
