Pardon the alter-ego loaded caption, but there’s a lot to unpack here and only so many letters allowed in a caption. We’ll spell it out…
You may have heard, Wrexham AFC won promotion to the English Football League on Saturday after a 3-1 win over Boreham Wood. The victory clinched the National League title for Wrexham, who will return to the EFL for the first time since the 2007-08 season.
This win is the beginning of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s dreams, and promises to the town, coming true. They acquired the team in 2021. Through the docuseries about the team that premiered in 2022, we learned that the actors were not welcomed with open arms by the tiny Welsh town. Wrexham, has a population of just over 50,000 people and the club is a major part of the town’s identity.
Although, after Saturday’s win, Ryan and Rob have officially become backed by the Wrexham Supporters Trust for life. And they knew it too. After the celebratory smoke cleared, a video was posted of the co-owners tearing up as they went in for a hug at the final whistle.
Rob’s post came with the caption, “You can see something leave both of our bodies at the same time. And then we’re filled back up with an indescribable amount of joy and gratitude.” Ryan’s was similar saying, but he credited the videographer. Paul Rudd.
