Wawa Brings Back SchwarberFest, Schwarber hits 488ft Bomb. Coincidence?

Timing….its everything.

Wawa announced that they are bringing back “Hoagiefest” but rebranding it as “Schwarberfest.” This, after fans noticed that Kyle Schwarber went OFF during the summer staple hitting 15 home runs in 31 days. Barstool Philly then put it out into the twitterverse and Wawa responded in kind. You can now grab a Shorti for $5 or a Classic for $6.

 

Wawa announced the decision to kick off “Schwarberfest” right before first pitch of game 1 of the NLCS. How did Schwarber respond? He started off working a walk. He then singled. And in his next at bat he hit a ball back to Philly

We applaud Wawa for taking one for the team, allowing Schwarber to ring the bell. We also applaud The Big Piece for continuing to do all the Philly things.

Not to be selfish, but our buddy Kevin Cooney dropped a good idea on Twitter. $5 and $6 are really great savings, but he suggested that all hoagies should be $4.88  in honor of last night’s bomb. Congratulations, Dawn, your dream came true.

Story Behind the Phillies New Celebration Song + Other Songs in Philly Sports History

Learn these lyrics, Philadelphia sports fans, because you’re going to start hearing that song a lot more. It’s called “Dancing on My Own” originally sung by Swedish singer-songwriter Robyn.

With every Playoff Round win, we’ve watched Phillies belt out the song in the Clubhouse. It played over the speakers at Citizens Bank Park on Friday night after the Phillies’ 9-1 win over the Braves, before Harry Kalas’ “High Hopes.”  It’s been creeping into local bar playlists and it was heard blasting from  tailgate speakers all day long before the undefeated Eagles put the Cowboys to bed on Sunday.

Phillies’ Beat Writer, Todd Zolecki, found out exactly how this song became the anthem of the 2022 team. Phillies catcher Garrett Stubbs told Todd, “After a win, we play ‘Dancing on My Own,’ ‘Cold Heart’ and a couple other ones. We’ve been playing those songs since the beginning of the season. They come on in order after wins, so everyone knows what songs are going to play and everyone knows the words to those songs.”

Garrett confirmed, “there’s no deeper meaning or backstory to it, other than it’s an absolute banger and we love singing it in the locker room.” For the record, they have the , Tiësto cover of the song by Calum Scott on their playlist.

As Philly Fans we welcome this song into our lives for a few more weeks, and then years after that! Below are a few songs that hold a special place in our hearts for the same reason.

  • "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now" - 1980 Phillies

    Philly natives McFadden and Whitehead were so passionate about the 1980 World Series run that they re-recorded a version of their 1979 hit with Phillies specific lyrics which included lines like: Kansas City, they had better watch out, because McGraw and Carlton are gonna strike them out. Now Kansas City I know is a super team, but the Phillie Phanatic is just as mean.

  • "Whoomp! (There It Is)" - 1993 Phillies

    With no apparent reasoning recorded, the Tag Team hit became the theme song of the Phillies during their 1993 pennant run. 

  • "Dreams and Nightmares" - 2017/18 Eagles

    The 2017 Philadelphia Eagles entered the field at Super Bowl LII to the Meek Mill beat and spent the post-game locker room celebration after their 41-33 win over the New England Patriots rapping along with the underdog anthem. Plus it gave us the iconic meme of Jeffery Laurie gettin’ low in the locker room.
