“Californication” by RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS

Californication is teeming with pop culture references and lyrical genius. Anthony Kiedis revealed in his book that the band had difficulty putting the song together. Kiedis had written the lyrics, which he felt were some of the best he had written, but the band could not decide how the song should sound musically. We’re happy with what they settled on, though. It’s an instant classic.

“Casey Jones” by GRATEFUL DEAD

Here you go, Pierre Robert, Grateful Dead for ya! Robert Hunter, the song’s lyricist, said that “Casey Jones” didn’t start out as a song, it just suddenly popped into his mind. “Driving that train, high on cocaine, Casey Jones, you better watch your speed.” It was the germ of a pretty good song. The song first appeared on the Dead’s 1970 album Workingman’s Dead. It was also included on a number of their live albums.

“Comfortably Numb” by PINK FLOYD

The Wall is a concept album about an embittered and alienated rock star named Pink. In “Comfortably Numb”, Pink is medicated by a doctor so he can perform for a show.  Roger Waters wrote the lyrics based on his experience of being injected with tranquillizers before a performance in 1977.
