WMMR Celebrates Women’s History Month: Week One
WMMR and Jacky BamBam are celebrating Women’s History Month. We are honoring the female artists who were fundamental in the evolution of everything that rocks.
Every weeknight in February, at 8 pm, Jacky BamBam will turn the spotlight on the music of incredible and influential female rock artists.
Starting on March 4, 2024, Jacky began this foray into the women who rock. Here are the artists he covered in the first week (Mar 4-8).
Debbie Harry
Debbie Harry is a singer, best known as the lead vocalist of the band Blondie. Four of her songs with the band reached No. 1 on the US charts between 1979 and 1981. She co-formed Blondie in 1974 in New York City. The band released its debut studio album in 1976. Harry released her debut solo studio album, KooKoo, in 1981. With her beauty, daring choice of clothing, and two-tone bleached-blonde hair, Harry quickly became a punk icon.
Pat Benatar
Pat Benatar is a rock singer and songwriter. In the United States, she has had two multi-platinum albums, five platinum albums, and 15 Billboard top 40 singles. She is also a four-time Grammy Award winner. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in November 2022.
Lzzy Hale
Lzzy Hale is a rock star (coming to our MMRBQ 2024!). She is the lead singer and rhythm guitarist of the rock band Halestorm, which she co-founded with her brother Arejay Hale in 1997. Hale refers to herself as an “Ambassador for Rock”. She is recognized for pushing conversations about mental health, being a role model for young artists and girls, and speaking to the need for gender equality and acceptance of people of all sexual orientations both within the music industry and society.
He is celebrating Women’s History Month the way only WMMR and Jacky BamBam can! It’s all part of everything that rocks.

5 Women Executives/Managers in Music Everyone Should Know
There are countless women artists in music that have made a massive impact on culture and entertainment. But what about some of the women behind the scenes many of us do not see? What about the women who have overcome adversity to become leaders in their field or heads of major record labels?
To celebrate Women’s History Month, we take a look at some of the most influential executives and managers in music, both past and present. Here’s a tribute to some of the women who smashed the glass ceiling.
A Brief History of Women’s History Month
The roots of Women’s History Month date back to 1911 and the first celebration of International Women’s Day. Since then, many activists and advocates have continually pushed Congress to recognize the achievements of women in the United States.
Through a lot of hard work and perseverance, International Women’s Day eventually turned into Women’s History Week in 1982. Following that accomplishment, the official Women’s History Month website states, “Throughout the next five years, Congress continued to pass joint resolutions designating a week in March as ‘Women’s History Week.’ In 1987 after being petitioned by the National Women’s History Project, Congress passed Pub. L. 100-9, which designated the month of March 1987 as ‘Women’s History Month.'”
Congress then continued to pass resolutions between 1988 and 1994 that authorized the President to proclaim every March as Women’s History Month. Beginning in 1995, every sitting President of the United States has issued an annual proclamation celebrating Women’s History Month.
People can celebrate Women’s History Month year-round thanks to WomensHistoryMonth.gov. The website is supported and run by a number of notable organizations and groups. Those organizations and groups include the National Gallery of Art, the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian Institute, the National Archives, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, the National Park Service and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
