One Caller Reminds Us Of The Power Of Live Radio
For the past 56 years WMMR has always prided itself with providing the best live radio to people of the Delaware Valley and beyond. It’s centered around this wonderful music we celebrate, not only as individuals but wholly as a community. Being their for our MMR family as we call it is a major priority for us. To celebrate the evseryday ups and downs that life can and will bring.
Recently during the Back to School A to Z we were reminded of the power of good that being a live and local radio station can have. Whilst in the midst of the letter “P”, Pierre Robert was conveying how incredible night number 2 with Pearl Jam was at The Big Joint after playing “Porch”. After that moment a woman by the name of Carol from Levittown called into the studio with such an amazing story and message.
Live Radio Means Spontaneity
As Pierre picked up the phone a very bubbly voice came down the line to share her Pearl Jam concert experience. “Hi Pierre… We very impulsively bought tickets last night to go. We had gone on Saturday and after hearing you and Nick in your pre show banter he was on his way home from work. I was at home cooking dinner and as soon as he got in the door I said you got to look and see if there were tickets and I’m so glad we did.” said one Carol of Levittown.
Pierre was just flabbergasted by this and asked how this all came about. Carol went on to say “My husband was coming home from work from King of Prussia. And we had talked about wanting to go… And I was like, you know, like they give you so much joy you should go. And he’s like, I don’t want to go alone. But then when I was hearing you and Nick chat I just got, you know fear of missing out” Nothing like FOMO to inspire a decision. But the source of that inspiration was what really drove Carol and her husband Mike to the Pearl Jam show.
Live Radio Means Community
Carol’s snap decision to make the trip from Levittown to South Philly was credited to Pierre and Nick McIlwain‘s pre concert coverage and represents what MMR is all about. “Shout out to you guys, you know for everything and=it just reminds me of why… Like I can listen to any song I want to listen to on any device that I have, you know? But I love listening to the radio because you hear things that, you know, you feel part of a community of, you know, other people are hearing what you’re saying. You’re making me feel, you know, I’m hearing about things that I might not hear about and it it just reminds me of why, you know, why I’ll sit through commercials and things like that”.
Pierre was really in tuned with this saying “I love what you said because what we do is community. You know, you’re right. You can hear any song you want to hear on any streaming service anyway. There you might listen to satellite radio, although none of it’s almost none of it’s live, right. But for all our faults, we are live and local and you know we do talk to our listeners as friends because you are friends and family and it’s part of this community.”
But the ultimate question: Was it worth it? “It was totally worth it” says Carol. This led to quite the prophetic line from the Professor of the A to Z Pierre Robert “Life is short. Buy the tickets”. Concert carpe diem at its finest. We thank Carol from Levittown for sharing her story and are so please her and Mike had a wonderful time at the show. More importantly we thank them, as we thank you, for being a member of the MMR Family. Nothing beats local and live radio!
