Chris Therien joins Preston & Steve to talk Flyers, Recovery, and more
Chris Therien joined The Preston & Steve Show on Friday morning to discuss his playing career with the Philadelphia Flyers, his community outreach work involved with recovery from addiction, and those annoying New York fans that come to the Wells Fargo Center.
Chris Therien in the Addiction Recovery Community
Therien wrote about his personal struggle with alcoholism in his book Chris Therien: Road to Redemption, which includes candid stories about his alcohol abuse at the end of his playing career following the death of his sister.
His life after hockey includes important outreach work in the local community through the Limitless Recovery Center in Fishtown.

He's a great dude who pulls no punches and like most Flyers fans, just wants to see the team succeed.
He also wants to see Philadelphia succeed & if you have addiction & recovery questions, he might be able to help. https://t.co/3EAipp2yE2
Therien also spoke on Preston & Steve about the side of life as a professional athlete that spots fan don’t always consider.
“There’s such a drive and such a focus in athletes. It’s something that I talk about a lot in what I’m doing now. What is the cost of that? What did that put me out of?”
He relates his recovery experience to the growing awareness of mental health.
“That’s something that I’m really trying to exact in athletes…getting out there talking to different communities about pressures, onuses we put on ourselves, what that does to us, and what that can do to us.”
Therien Talks Flyers
Therien spent 12 seasons in two stints with the Flyers beginning in 1995. He played more games than any defenseman in franchise history.
He talked about some of his favorite experiences as a player, the changing landscape of fighting in hockey, and the Flyers under new interim GM Danny Brière.
The conversation even ventured to naming Jaromír Jágr as the player with the greatest mullet in NHL history.
His best comments were directed towards the New York Rangers fans who invaded the Well Fargo Center for a Flyers-Rangers game on March 1.
“You guys don’t make your own building that loud in New York, so don’t come here and try it here because I’ve seen your phony-a** act up there.”
Chris Therien will be at the Flyers Charities Carnival on Sunday, March 26 at the Wells Fargo Center. You can reach him by sending an email to bundyrecovery@christherien.com.
