Brian May Talks About Scene That Was Almost Cut from ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’
Bohemian Rhapsody is still riding high at the box office, so you can’t blame Brian May for continuing to sing the film’s praises. However, he did reveal that a pivotal scene from the movie was almost scrapped from the final cut.
In an interview with Classic Rock magazine, May said the scene where Freddie Mercury (Rami Malek) tells the band about doing a solo album was almost cut due to time constraints.
“It’s a wonderful piece of acting – and a lot of that wasn’t in the script. And when I watch it I feel that is so Freddie,” said May. “…But we fought for that scene to stay in, because the realism of it is quite gut-wrenching. That was a difficult moment for us. It’s Freddie kinda leaving his family.”
May also managed to throw some major shade at Sacha Baron Cohen, who was originally tapped to play Mercury but left the film over various creative differences.
“Well, that was a near-disaster,” said May. “I think we realized just in time what a disaster that was going to be. And it actually wasn’t rocket science to figure that out.”
