Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt Play Surprise Covers Set at California Block Party
Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt played a surprise set at the 40th Street Block Party in Oakland, Calif. as part of their covers band appropriately called The Coverups.
The set took place on July 20, with the video below only now surfacing. The Coverups also features a number of Green Day’s personnel including tour manager Bill Schneider, touring guitarist Jason White and audio engineer Chris Dugan. The band’s setlist (below) covers a wide range of artists from the Ramones (“I Wanna Be Sedated,” “Sheena Is A Punk Rocker” ) to Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers (“American Girl”) to David Bowie (“Rebel Rebel.”)
The set from The Coverups follows a week of speculation that Green Day had something in the works after each band member shared via Instagram an image of the same bull’s head along with another picture a band member in some sort of rehearsal space. Many outlets have speculated that a 25th anniversary tour in honor of the breakout album Dookie could be imminent, but there has yet to be any confirmation.
