Philadelphia In The Top 10 Worst Cities To Drive In
Philadelphia is ranked as one of the worst cities to drive in. If you live here you already know that. We can all name the worst parts of our daily commutes before someone tries to pronounce the word ‘Schuylkill’. A lot of times there doesn’t even need to be heavy volume for there to be traffic. When you have to drive on a 2 lane highway jammed between a river and a small mountain there doesn’t have to be a rhyme or reason for traffic! We’ve all hit standstill traffic on 76 on a random Saturday morning because someone decided to tap their brakes 2 miles ahead of you.
It’s not just the highways that suck here. A few Philadelphia intersections are routinely ranked as some of the worst intersections in the country. The most recent ranking has the intersection of Street Road and Knights Road as one of the worst. Two of the really bad ones are along Roosevelt Boulevard where I grew up in Northeast Philly. Grant Ave and Blvd, and Welsh Road and the Blvd. I’ve crossed these intersections my entire life and they have sucked from 1987 through today. The problem with these intersections is the traffic turning from Welsh or Grant. The lead driver needs to go all the way across to the 6 lanes instead of stopping in the middle causing a huge backup. Once the light turns, half the cars are hurrying to get out of the intersection before some bozo who isn’t paying attention T-Bones them.
Wallent Hub listed the best and worst cities to drive in in the United States and Philadelphia is the 6th worst. Part of the issue volume. You only have so much space for so many cars driving through the area. Road design is an issue if you want to take 76 as your primary example. I think we all know what the real issue is causing Philly to suffer. It’s New Jersey drivers coming over the bridge to clog up our roadways!
