Rolling Stones Share Tribute Video to Charlie Watts
The Rolling Stones released a two-minute tribute video to their late drummer Charlie Watts.
Featuring photos and video throughout the Stones’ history as a band, the clip below is soundtracked by the song “If You Can’t Rock Me” from the band’s 1974 studio album It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll. The track opens with the lyrics, “The band’s on stage and it’s one of those nights, oh yeah/The drummer thinks that he is dynamite, oh yeah.”
The video also features an interview excerpt from an unknown year Watts where he said, “So, when the Stones asked me to join, they talked in terms of a band, you know, commitment. So, I thought, ‘Oh, this’ll go on a year, and then the next year, we’ll fold up.'”
Watts passed away on August 24 at the age of 80. His cause of death has not been confirmed, but per the statement announcing his death, “He passed away peacefully in a London hospital earlier today surrounded by his family.”
Watts joined the Rolling Stones in January 1963 and played on all 30 of their studio albums. Earlier this month, the Stones announced Watts would be sitting out their upcoming United States tour citing an undisclosed medical issue. Up until then, he hadn’t missed a single performance since joining the band.
