The Black Crowes Are Reviving Rock n’ Roll [Interview]
From looking back on their past volatility to discussing their current studio and stage dynamics, Chris and Rich Robinson of the Black Crowes covered it all on 93.3 WMMR Philadelphia. Pierre Robert welcomed the brothers to his studio before they played a sold-out show at The Met on Broad Street that night.
Being in a band with your brother is not easy, but in recent years, Chris and Rich have been getting along just fine; their relationship seems to have strengthened after their Shake Your Money Maker tour, and they’ve found a renewed creative energy in the recording of their new album Happiness Bastards. In their conversation with Pierre, they acknowledged the tense moments in their past, but then put it to bed, with Rich simply stating, “I think a lot of that is played up.”
WMMR has been playing the latest Black Crowes track “Wanting and Waiting,” and Chris says that it’s a perfect encapsulation of where the band is now, musically and mentally. “We wanted the vibes of why we love rock and roll music, and why we love each other,” he says. “We want (the music) to be as powerful as we can make it, in the kinds of colors and tones and textures of things that we want to say.”
To make it meta: “This is like a Black Crowes sandwich with extra Black Crowes sauce on it, and with a side of Black Crowes.”
Chris and Rich also tell Pierre about their experience performing with Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, why they will never play to a click track, and what they did to impress Joey Ramone…
