“There’s moments in film that can kill us and when they do, it reminds us of why we love to go.” – Kevin Costner

Horizon: An American Saga opens June 28th
The first scene opens with a man and his son out in the frontier that gives you a catch in your throat. His goal when making Horizon was to keep the action and excitement of the film while simultaneously highlighting characters’ humility, transporting the audience into a whole other world.
What was it like to receive a standing ovation at Cannes that was 3 whole minutes longer than “Stairway To Heaven”? “I didn’t know what to do. The camera came very close to me. I also had my children, five of them, next to me… I found myself in the middle of that, walking my life back. Believe it or not.” Kevin continued, “I felt the sound go away from me for a second and I walked it back to the very beginning; what was it that I loved about movies? And it’s when they just took me some place. When they went on and I didn’t want them to end.” When the sound of the applause returned Kevin realized how grateful he was for people who want to be entertained by movies.
Kevin always knew he had a gift in storytelling, but he did not realize he could make a living out of it. “It’s not easy to make a good movie.”
Good movies become moments you never forget.
We talked about how impactful great movies can be. “You start to see how you want to behave, who stood up when everybody stood down.” Kevin talked about how male characters are a guide for him in film making and how “you can’t have a great movie without having great women.” It’s important to him to go a few steps further and create something that sticks with the audience.
Once we start talking about Westerns, the passion really began to flow. Kevin pointed out the importance of dialogue in western films; the words are more important and impactful than the gun fight scenes.
Peek into a mastermind as Kevin reveals that the value of a movie does not exist completely in its opening weekend. It’s in what we are willing to revisit 20 or 30 years down the road.
