Pierre’s Playlist: National Radio Day 2024
One of the first things we go over in Pierre’s Planner is what “national day” that particular day has been dubbed. Usually there are a few per day and can happen due to a multitude of reasons. It could be to raise awareness to a particular cause, like Nation Accessible Air Travel day. It could be to celebrate something whimsical, like National Chocolate Pecan Pie day. But today we showcase the incredible piece of media that binds us all together. Today we celebrate the wonder that is National Radio Day!
History Of National Radio Day
There are many notable names who have had their hand in making modern day radio a reality. Some of the brilliant minds involved include household scientific names like Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla. The primary credit, however, is awarded to an Italian physicist by the name of Guglielmo Marconi. In the late 1800s he produced the first radio broadcast over the open seas. With a distance of 6 miles over the Bristol Channel, he sent a very simple yet profound message: “Are you ready”
The world was forever changed after those words as the radio revolutionized the way we are able to communicate to one another. Over 100 years after Marconi’s message was sent we still celebrate this amazing achievement each and every day.
WMMR: Radio’s Past, Present And Future
On April 29th 1968, the world (more specifically the great city of Philadelphia) was asked once again “Are you ready” as it was the dawn of an amazing chapter in the continuous history of radio. Fitting it honors one of radio’s originators The Marconi Experiment first aired on Frequency Modulation (FM) side of the radio dial at 93.3 Megahertz. And at that moment the Rock and Roll institution of 93.3 WMMR was born.
Flash forward 56 years and we are still providing Philly “Everything That Rocks”. That phrase of course has its roots in the music we all celebrate and champion each and every day. However, probably more importantly, it also represents how we serve our great community. It could be those everyday things like getting through the working day with the Workforce Blocks. It could dedicating a song for birthday/anniversary or honor a loved one’s passing. It could even be a rallying cry to help feed our neighbors in need a-la Preston and Steve’s Campout for Hunger. So we celebrate national radio day with the most important piece of the equation: YOU!
For the past 56 years we have had the great pleasure of serving what we call the MMR Family. It truly is a family affair when a like minded community can get to together. Whether you still listen on the FM dial or take us digitally here, the MMR App, or with the smart speaker skill we look forward to serving the MMR family for many years to come. That is the true beauty, power and magic of radio.
