PATCO Promises Franklin Square Station Will Reopen This Spring
A Philadelphia train station that has been closed for decades has been revamped and is almost ready to reopen to passengers.
Late during the week of March 10, PATCO released a promotional video showcasing significant upgrades to the Franklin Square Station at the edge of Old City Philadelphia. The video ends with an on-screen message: “Trains arriving April 2025.”
According to an NBC10 Philadelphia report, the station’s above-ground area features extensive glass panels allowing natural light into the interior and some inside seating. Underground, a traditional subway tile installation further complements the station’s revitalized look.
PATCO’s Franklin Square Station closed in 1979 and has remained a “ghost station” that has been passed over by trains connecting Camden, New Jersey, with Philadelphia for the better part of four decades.
After an extensive reconstruction project that took three years to complete, PATCO officials say the station is on track for a long-awaited reopening in spring 2025. A specific grand opening date for Franklin Square Station has not been announced.
