Kids, Listen Up! Even Sting Still Practices Guitar Every Morning
He’s back! Sting returns to The Preston & Steve Show airwaves ahead of his shows on Monday, September 30th and Tuesday, October 1st at The Met Philadelphia.
“It’s always fun to come to Philadelphia, it really is.”
When Sting brings his 3.0 Tour to Philadelphia, he will also be giving back to the city. Sting is donating $25,000 to Philly’s Laura W. Waring Elementary School’s music program. He is really passionate about keeping music programs in schools.
Preston was a band kid himself, so he knows how important music in schools is. Sting agreed, “people learn when they’re engaged through fun… not some dry academic study… music’s fun!”
Sting is back on tour with members, Chris Maas on drums and Dominic Miller on guitar. Dominic has been by his side for 35 years. The trio is very close with each other, which makes performing so fun. There is a sense of freedom, but there is also no safety net. Each performance is different. On the 3.0 Tour, they are playing songs they haven’t played in years – and some new songs.
“Writing music is a bit of an arduous process, but when it happens, it is a great feeling.”
The band’s new song ‘I Wrote Your Name (Upon My Heart)’ is very stripped down and gives a raw feel. Sting gets writing inspiration from anything that sparks a theme. When he hears people interpret his songs, he likes that he can get something new; something that he hadn’t thought of before. For this new song, it was much simpler. During the interview, Sting just grabbed his guitar and started to play while explaining the process. The 17-time Grammy winner claims that the best lyrics are written by the music – it’s is the most natural way.
Where does this legendary artist write new songs? Apparently, the songwriting magic happens at home. Never on tour or when he is traveling elsewhere. Home is his “creative partner”. Each of Sting’s properties brings different atmospheres to write in. That’s all he needs to create a notable song.
The 3.0 concert will be at the Met Philadelphia on Monday, September 30, and Tuesday, October 1. Philly native, Eric Louis, will be opening the show. (He is a wicked piano player!) All concert proceeds will go to the Laura Waring elementary school. Tickets available at The MetPhilly.com.
