Scott Hartnell Talks Ed Snider, Flyers With Preston & Steve
Former Philadelphia Flyers forward Scott Hartnell joined The Preston & Steve Show to talk about the perks of his recent road trip to Canada, his glory days in the NHL, and the Ed Snider Legacy Game coming up on Saturday, Jan. 6 at the Wells Fargo Center.
Ed Snider Legacy Game
When the Calgary Flames visit the Flyers on Saturday at 1 pm, the organization will pay tribute to their legendary founder on what would’ve been his 91st birthday.
Snider brought hockey to Philadelphia as part of the 1967 NHL Expansion wave. The Flyers endeared themselves to the city quickly with their notorious “Broad Street Bullies” mantra. Hartnell talked about the legendary franchise founder and his place in establishing the Flyers as an integral part of the city of Philadelphia and its identity.
“The man was special. I think everyone who met Mr. Snider, you could see his passion. You could see his charisma for the city…He was just a man of the people.” -Scott Hartnell
Hartnell spent seven of his 17 NHL seasons with the Flyers. He talked about playing for Mr. Snider before his unfortunate passing in 2016.
“When I signed here and met him for the first time, I was in awe. He had that presence.” -Hartnell
The Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation creates opportunities for under-resourced youth of the Greater Philadelphia Region to prosper in life. The continuing initiative is a tribute to Snider’s legacy as a philanthropist beyond his recognition as a successful NHL owner.
Scott Hartnell- Flyers Fan Favorite
Hartnell famously helped the Flyers on their unlikely underdog journey to an appearance in the 2010 Stanley Cup Final. He also stirred the pot for the bitter rivalry against the Pittsburgh Penguins in a way that endeared him as a fan favorite in Philadelphia.
He spoke about the things he misses about playing in the NHL.
“When you hit the back of the net, at home (or) on the road, you’ve got 20,000 people there just screaming your name when you had a good shot. Those kind of highs you never replicate.” -Hartnell
The Saskatchewan native hasn’t lost his sense of humor. He filled in for Brian Boucher as a color commentator on the team’s broadcast for their recent road trip that included stops in Vancouver, Edmonton, and Calgary.
“It’s always cool to go back there. Everything’s better in Canada, just a little bit better. The chocolate, the candy. The beers are stronger.” -Hartnell
