Trying to Make Your Own Cleaning Solution? Don’t Mix These Chemicals
Sometime, somewhere, in some school book you have long forgotten, you once learned that mixing bleach and rubbing alcohol makes chloroform. Yup, real deal chloroform. We have discussed in the past that chloroform doesn’t work in real life like it does in the movies; holding a doused rag over a person’s face doesn’t knock them out, but once inhaled it can cause lots of issues with the nervous system. Moral of the story, don’t mess with chemicals! The CDC has released a list of common concoctions to avoid:
— Bleach and ammonia: this mixture produces a toxic gas called chloramine. It causes shortness of breath and chest pains.
— Bleach and rubbing alcohol: This produce chloroform which is highly toxic.
— Bleach and vinegar: This will produce chlorine gas which will cause coughing, breathing problems, burning and watery eyes.
— Hydrogen peroxide and vinegar – This combination produces peracetic/peroxyacetic acid which is highly corrosive.
