HOLY GUACAMOLE! Millions of Free Avocados to Be Distributed Starting Wednesday
Due to a massive surplus of Avocados in South America, there are literally millions of perfectly edible avocados at risk of going to waste right here in the Philadelphia area. Sharing Excess, is not going to let that happen.
Sharing Excess, an organization collects and distributes excess food, is giving away free avocados to everyone in Philadelphia.
Let me say that again: FREE AVOCADOS TO EVERYONE.
There are currently three truckloads of avocados that Sharing Excess has in their possession and they are determined to make sure every last pitted fruit goes to a good home.
Beginning Wednesday at 12pm, the group is setting up a free distribution in FDR Park. The event will wrap up at 6pm, then open again Thursday, 12p – 6p and Friday for the same hours until the avocados are all distributed.
Evan Ehlers, who started Sharing Excess while he was a student at Drexel University, joined The Preston & Steve Show to get the word out. Of course we had lots of questions, here are few of the pertinent topics:
- Is there a limit as to how many avocados one person can get?
- As long as they are going to a good place, Sharing Access is open to accommodating large requests.
- What about donating to local organizations?
- Yes, but this surplus is so intense, that there is more than food pantries can use before spoiling.
- Weren’t we just experiencing a shortage of avocados?
- Yup! Funny how that works.
Help Sharing Excess get these avocados to a good home and into your tummies before the end of the week! Please share and get the word out.
More about Sharing Excess: they are an organization that bridges the gap between excess and scarcity. They partner with grocery stores, restaurants, wholesalers, and farmers to deliver surplus food to a network of nonprofits, food banks, and community organizations to alleviate local food insecurity.
The grassroots effort began in 2018 has grown to a national movement that has fed hundreds of thousands of people. To donate, volunteer and learn more about the efforts, visit sharingexcess.com
